In The Beginning (Prologue)

I tiptoed down the dark hallway.

The icy wooden floor always stung at my feet.

The door to my father's study was slightly open, letting a sliver of bright light streak up and down the opposing wall.

My father never left the door open.

I peered into the light and my eyes widened as I slowly pushed the door.

Papers and torn books were strung all over the floor and flew through the air, along with other various objects. In the center of this chaotic atmosphere stood a boy who looked my age.

His eyes darted from book to book.

A navy blue, leather-back book caught his attention.

And so did I.

"Don't get your weave in a twist, Tay. Let him have a sip." Austin, sitting across from the feud, scoffed and ran his fingers through his dirty-blonde hair calmly.
Tay continued as if she didn't even hear him, "Take yo' dirty fangas off my cup, boy. I ain't tellin' you again." She stood and glared down at him.
"Guuurrl, you get anymo' ghetto and yo' breast milk gon' turn to Kool-Aid," he rolled his head dramatically, a blatant display of mocking her accent.

Grim (Stave Four)

A relieved sigh escaped my lips as the beat-up house came into view.

The house had no kind of garden or appealing figurines on the small, green lawn. To be honest, it was completely bare.

The best thing we had was a little roofed patio to the side of the building. Tiny blinking lights were lazily strung on the edge of the patio's roof. (They have been there since we moved into this shabby house – so for about three years.)

Nitidus never pulled them down because they were motion sensors.

Just picture it: colorful Christmas lights blinking when some unsuspecting fool comes within twenty meters of our front door.

I pressed my back against the door and sighed.

But I wanted to cry.

Oh, how much I wanted to cry.

I wanted to wail like a child and cradle my head between my knees.
I wanted my sobbing to reach the end of the hallway, where my father’s office was.
He would have chuckled and rose from that leather seat, running back through the hall to my door.
We would have a short exchange of meaningless words before he creaked open the door and picked me up.
He would ask me the usual questions like, “What happened, mija?” and “Why are you crying?”
I would respond only by crying more, as if my ability to speak was taken from
